Why is career exploration important for middle school students?

We believe middle school is the best time to explore careers. Middle school students have big dreams and do not have the pressure of high school responsibilities yet. There are no SAT or ACTs to study for; there are no college essays or early admission applications to fill out, no after school jobs or drivers education hours to fill their time. Middle school students can just focus on what they love and what they are interested in. By discovering these during middle school, it will make the high school experience more exciting and less stressful. Plus, there have been plenty of research studies that back us on that. You can see some of the bullet points of those studies here.

Doesn't my student already get this in school?

While all schools are different, we can confidently say that this experience is much different from any other career exploration program. Schools are doing their best to have career exploration in their curriculum, but they do not have the resources to offer a career exploration course focusing on each student.

Is the program group focused or individually focused?

The simple answer is both. The complicated answer is that there are areas of career exploration that apply to all careers. Therefore, we will teach these areas of the curriculum will be in a group format. The assignments and actual career exploration part of the curriculum the students will do individually. Each student will also have individual coaching. When your child completes the course, they will have a unique blueprint for high school and beyond.

How much of a commitment is needed?

Quality career exploration cannot happen in class time alone. Each week students will be assigned work to help them discover their unique path. The time commitment will vary each week but shouldn't be more than a few hours. The assignments should be fun for your child as the work is all about their interests and passions.

What if my child already knows what they want to be? Would this course be beneficial?

Students that have already discovered their purpose will still benefit from the program. It will be a game-changer! The My Twenty Seconds course is designed to give your child an advantage over others exploring their field of interest. We do this by creating a solid plan for high school, including classes and extracurricular activities. We also focus on making connections within the industry and how to grow our network. Whether a student is set on a career or has no idea of what they hope to be, this course will keep them moving in the right direction.

In the course overview, it lists networking. What does that entail?

The networking portion of the program is always a highlight for the students. We do our very best to connect each student to someone in their chosen profession or field of interest. Students will have a zoom meeting with that individual to ask questions and make a connection.  Some students are even able to visit workplaces and shadow individuals. We teach students how to make these connections even after the program ends—building up their network to help them get their foot in the door after graduation.
